Kerala Temple Protection Samithi protests against Speaker AN Shamseer’s ‘mythology vs science’ comment

Kerala Temple Protection Samithi on July 26 held a protest march against the Legislative Assembly Speaker AN Shamseer, alleging that he “insulted” Hindu beliefs. The protest was held against the Speaker’s comment on Lord Ganesha. The protestors demanded the resignation of the Speaker. During a programme at a school in Ernakulam on July 21, the Kerala Speaker Shamseer allegedly said that the Centre should teach the children about accomplishments in science and technology instead of Hindu myths. The Speaker was replying to a question about who invented airplanes. In his reply, AN Shamseer said that for him, it was invented by the Wright brothers, but for the believers of Hindutva, the first airplane was a Pushpak Vinman (a flying chariot mentioned in the Hindu epic Ramayana). Shamseer further went on to say that the Hindutva ideologues propagate that it was through plastic surgery that Lord Ganesh got his face and dismissed it as a myth.
