Syria fights 'catastrophic' fires for fourth day

Syrian authorities said some 100 square kilometres (40 square miles) of forest had "turned to ash" in wildfires as firefighters from neighbouring Jordan arrived Sunday to battle a fourth day of blazes in the province of Latakia. More than 80 teams including civil defence personnel have been helping battle the blaze, he said, noting local organisations and residents were also providing assistance, in addition to teams and firefighting aircraft from neighbouring Jordan and Turkey. from Environment News, Earth News, Global Warming, Wild Life, Carbon Trading, Climate Business, Climate Change & Pollution News https://ift.tt/Lg8PkNE

China earthquake: Scientists received an ominous signal days before Gansu earthquake

Chinese scientists successfully forecasted a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Gansu, though unable to pinpoint the location. Using a technique that predicted 7.0 magnitude earthquakes in Shaanxi, they relied on text alerts from multiple sensors with anomalous readings. Shaanxi researchers monitored Earth's gravitational field, identifying anomalies as earthquake indicators. The team calculated a high probability of the Gansu earthquake within three to five days, with a magnitude around 6.27. Despite the surprise at the event's proximity, the China Earthquake Early Warning Network efficiently sent alerts within 30 seconds, showcasing the system's effectiveness, especially in the closest areas where alerts were received in just 12 seconds.
